Binaural Beats Meditations are actually my favorite, mainly because they are so effective. Many people miss out on the benefits of meditation, because they cannot reach a deeper state of mind during their meditation. Binaural Beats are your shortcut ;-)!

No matter if you are a beginner or a meditation expert, binaural beats can help you to relax within minutes and take you right into a blissful state.

But let’s start from the beginning.

What are binaural beats exactly?

Binaural beats are a brainwave entrainment technique by audio stimulation that affects your brain activity and therefore how you feel. It was a German physicist, Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, in the 19th century who first discovered how the brain responds when presented with different sound frequencies. But it was not until the 20th century when this technique associated with music started to become more popular to help people meditate more effectively.

How do binaural beats work?

Basically a tone with one frequency is played in your left ear and a slightly different one in your right ear. The brain then reacts and tries to reconcile and synchronize both frequencies by creating its own tone (or beat) with its own frequency. This is called the binaural beat and is exactly the difference between the left and the right tone frequencies.

Let me give you an example. If you hear a 100Hz tone in your left ear and a 110Hz tone in your right ear, the binaural beat created by your brain would have a frequency of 10Hz. You will need to use stereo headphones for the beats to work, as they are being produced directly in your brain.

Binaural beats take you faster into the Alpha state

There are a number of scientific research studies on how binaural stimulation makes it easier to enter the Alpha state. In simple words: it’s all about the frequency of the binaural beat. When it has a frequency between 7Hz and 13Hz it triggers a specific brain activity and brings you to the relaxed state of Alpha.

To give you some background information:

Your brain operates at different brainwave frequencies throughout your day. This activity is very unique to you, like your heartbeats, your brain waves have a special rhythm and pattern. Your brain incorporates different Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta frequencies at different levels during the course of your day to match your behavior and activities.

In Beta (13-40Hz) you are wide-awake, alert. Your mind is sharp and focused. This may be the case at a brainstorming meeting, before an exam, at any activity that needs high concentration and peak performance of you.

The Alpha State kicks in between 7-13 Hz. With the gentle waves of Alpha you relax deeply, your brain activity slows down, your awareness expands, fresh creativity begins to flow, your stress resolves quickly.

The brainwaves in Theta are even slower with 4-7Hz, where brain activity slows almost to the point of sleep. It opens the door to your most creative side, to brilliant ideas, you experience flashes of dreamlike imagery, inspiration or forgotten memories. Sometimes you may feel that your mind expands beyond your body. Theta is the deepest levels of meditation, awakes intuition and opens the door to your subconscious mind.

And finally beats with a lower frequency than 4Hz usually bring you a deep sleep and to the Delta State. Delta is the slowest of all four brain wave frequencies. These frequencies trigger the release of hormones beneficial for healing and regeneration. This is why a good deep sleep is necessary in the healing process.

Studies have shown that with binaural beats you can enter easily into a deep relaxation mode and access the key to your subconscious mind more effectively than without that audio stimulus. Mostly you will find on top of the beats relaxing music because without, it may sound a bit odd to you or at least takes some time getting used to.


Why should you include binaural beats in your meditation routine?

As Matthieu Ricard, the Happiest Man Alive, once said:

“anyone can be happy by simply training their brain”.

But training takes time.

Meditation is a journey, a long one that can exhaust you halfway if you don’t persevere. By incorporating binaural beats to your meditation routine, the journey gets easier.
